TPI Outlook for
the Global Outsourcing Industry for 2009 |

While the depth and extent of the current global economic crisis is
not a topic for which we are equipped to predict the future, TPI believes
that certain effects of the financial uncertainty are likely to be felt
across the global outsourcing industry.
Entering 2009, we note several macro-economic issues rising in
importance among the strategic decision-makers in major corporations:
- Sales/profits will decrease for many industry sectors
- Spending in many industries will be down
- Unemployment will be up globally
- Resiliency concerns will increase due to terrorism threats
- Government intervention will increase globally

Industry Expert Article: Alignment Is Key to Growth by
Rosemary Collins, Partner & Managing Director, CHRO Services
North America, TPI
Nearly three out of four senior business leaders believe that human
capital and talent are paramount to the success of their organizations,
according to a recent global survey by Deloitte and the Economist
Intelligence Unit. Unfortunately, only eight percent express confidence in
the way their company manages its talent. How can HR transform to deliver
service and capabilities to support aggressive business growth while
developing the critical human capital base? Consider
the Source Blog: Demand-Supply Syndrome in Action by
Dinesh Goel, Director, TPI
The conventional wisdom used to be that demand is not a gating function
in the outsourcing industry. Growth was a function of ability to build
supply capacity for service and support. Talk to a CEO today, and you’ll
hear the opposite.
I was recently in conversation with the CEO of a large BPO provider and
heard the musing, “Our current problem is business growth — not
employees!” With captives folding up or slowing down their growth in India
and customers pulling out from existing service providers, there is
suddenly over-supply of talent in the market, at least in the short-term.
That’s perhaps the only positive consequence of the current macroeconomic
climate.

Reasons That U.S. Domestic
Sourcing Might Just Catch On in 2009
|
|
The total costs for transactional business
processes (not just the labor component) are shown to be relatively
neutral if delivered from certain U.S. locations.
Five Ways That
This Might Be Possible …
- Unemployment in the U.S. surpasses 9 percent, and there is
availability of skilled labor for the foreseeable future
- Evaporation of retirement assets forces U.S. workers to delay the
end of careers, or even return to the workforce
- Corporate executives feel compelled by social and community
responsibilities to seek U.S.-based delivery resources as part of a
program to enhance consumer confidence and spending
- Concerns regarding global terrorism, data security and business
resiliency compel governments and corporations to restrict the export of
business-critical operations
- The Obama administration launches a “relief program” to subsidize
certain trade zones via tax and re-training programs
